Cross-Generation Collaboration, X-Gen + Millennials = Good Stuff

My kids and their friends are considered “Millennials”; I have to admit that I am impressed by the energy, enthusiasm, and creativity they bring to many work related topics I’ve discussed with them. Currently most of them have summer jobs. They work hard and play hard – in that order.  I’d love to hear your opinion, x-gen and millennials both, on how can we work together to pave the way for prosperous future for ALL of us.

    According to, this is the first time in history that our workforce consists of four generations working side by side: The Silent Generation (born 1933-1945), The Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964), Generation X (born 1965-1976), The Millennial Generation (born 1977-1998). Every generation has its strengths and weaknesses. When we are pooled together as a group anything is possible.     Throughout my workplace experience, I have worked along side many from Generation X and I’ve had no problems. I have found that the key is to be respectful, open-minded, and patient. I find that the most productive workplace is one in which generations can commingle. For example when the energy of the Millennials is guided by the mentoring from Generation X it pushed productivity in a positive direction. It is definitely worth investing the time in collaboration and corroboration in my opinion.

    Great article Alex! What is the best way to resolve conflicts of opinions, styles, etc.? Do you respond to facebook notifications or tweets in the middle of a conversation? I know it is the norm with Millennials but has that been a problem when interacting with older generation (I refer to them as x-gen)? Just curious.

    The New York Times recently published a fascinating article on a literary project done by the Pew Research Center’s on the somewhat controversal “millennials” generation. The article link is , and definitely a worth a read. It analyzed the 2010 report, titled “Confident. Connected. Open to Change,” and uncovered some truly noble qualities and values consist of the “roughly 50 million millennials” that contradict the undesirable stereotypes that stigmatize this particular generation. Some of this generation’s strongest strengths and fundamental beliefs are pretty surprising, and that’s coming from a millennial!
    We, millennials, grew up in a world that is drastically different than our predecessor, Generation X, and with the rate of innovation and technology accelerating, I think it is imperative that there is intergenerational mixture in the workplace because it acts as a medium to pass down wisdom and knowledge onto the future workforce as well as provides the gen-Xer’s exposure the new ways of thinking and innovation that will lead to problem solving, and ultimately shape our future’s progress.
